Fossils

Northwestern Newfoundland’s limestones formed in an ocean 450 million years ago. It was alive with plants and animals, and many of their remains are easy to see in the limestone bedrock. Worm tracks and holes are common in the ancient limy mud, and you will also find snail shells, large conical nautiloid shells made by squid-like animals, trilobites, crinoid (sea lily) stems, and algal mounds.
